Argyrenia’s Soap-Making Workshop is a vibrant activity that honours the rich cultural tradition of Syros. Aegean Echoes towards Empowerment and Sustainability accompanied and guided groups of visitors to Argyrenia’s welcoming space, giving them the opportunity to enjoy a different kind of creative process.
Under the guidance of Cynthia, participants were able to combine local knowledge with handmade craft. Starting with vegetable glycerin, which they melted and scented with natural fragrances inspired by the island – such as loukoumi, rose, bergamot, and coconut – they created their own mixture, into which they added dried herbs for natural exfoliation. The process was completed by pouring the soap into moulds of different shapes, giving each creation a personal character.
The experience went far beyond simple handcraft. It became a journey into the intangible cultural heritage of Syros: a hands-on workshop where working with one’s hands brought back memories and stories of everyday life on the island, and of the enduring relationship between people and nature over time.
