Orophographia

When Cultural Identity Becomes Strategy, Collection and Continuity

There are projects that begin as a communication need and evolve into a living cultural journey.
The story of Orophographia is one such example.

It did not begin as a collection. It began as a question.

The Starting Point: 30 Years and a Different Approach

In 2015, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Kois Optics, the initial idea was to create a commemorative logo — a symbol that would honor the brand’s three-decade journey.

The anniversary logo was designed by Giannis Baritakis. It was contemporary, clean, and clearly defined. Yet the strategic thinking did not stop there.

Thanos Karvouniaris, who was responsible for Marketing & Communication at the time, recognized that the anniversary could carry greater depth. The pivotal moment came when the new logo “met” the ceiling fresco of the Kois Mansion in Ermoupolis.

The ceiling — with its intricate motifs and carefully balanced geometry — was not merely decorative. It was part of the city’s cultural identity.

And that is when the central question emerged:

Can heritage be worn?

From Concept to Object

The answer took shape through collaboration with Italia Independent. A specific section of the ceiling fresco was carefully selected and translated onto the frame of a collectible pair of eyewear.

This was not a decorative reproduction.
It was a deliberate transfer of aesthetic memory into contemporary design.

The campaign was launched under the message:

“The Heritage of Ermoupolis in Your Eyes.”

The official presentation took place beneath the very ceiling that inspired the creation. The photographs from that evening capture the symbolism: guests looking upward at the fresco, trying on the glasses, engaging in conversation within the same space where the idea was born. The team stood in front of the store not merely as organizers, but as creators of a new proposal.

From Commemorative Object to Collection with Identity

Orophographia did not remain a single anniversary piece. It evolved into a collectible series with new designs and variations, while maintaining its original source of inspiration.

At the same time, part of the proceeds supported the effort to include Ermoupolis on the UNESCO World Heritage List, reinforcing the cultural dimension of the initiative.

The collection gradually came to represent:

– a contemporary interpretation of cultural heritage
– an example of local design with international perspective
– a bridge between entrepreneurship and culture

Connecting with Education

In collaboration with the University of the Aegean, a student design competition was organized, inspired by the motifs of the ceiling fresco.

Images from workshops and presentations show students analyzing patterns, experimenting with form, and proposing new interpretations. The initial idea transformed into a field of creative research.

Orophographia became a reference point for how cultural inspiration can be transmitted to a new generation of designers.

Extending Beyond Syros

Participation in the Costa Navarino Challenge marked an important step toward outward growth.

Within an international environment, the collection was introduced to an audience seeking quality and authenticity. The Kois Optics booth did not simply present products — it presented a story of origin.

Orophographia traveled beyond the borders of Syros while preserving its cultural roots.

Continuity

For Thanos Karvouniaris, this project demonstrated that cultural storytelling, when combined with strategic thinking, can produce lasting impact.

From a commemorative logo to a collectible object.
From a product to a series.
From a local inspiration to a recognizable proposal with broader reach.

This experience also shaped the philosophy of Aegean Echoes:
that cultural heritage does not belong solely to the past. It can be translated, redesigned, and expressed in contemporary form.

And when this is done with consistency and purpose, what is created is not merely a collection.

It is continuity.
